Six inducted into MDIHS Hall of Fame



BAR HARBOR — At halftime of the homecoming football game at the Mount Desert Island High School on Friday, Oct. 16, six members were inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

Renee Laber coached indoor and outdoor track at MDI High School for 25 years, where she served as both the head and assistant coach during her career.

John Cater ’60 was a three-time basketball state champion. He also played baseball and had a batting average of over .400.

Todd Brophy ’83 was captain of the basketball team his senior year. He was voted the MVP of his basketball team his junior year. He also ran cross-country and outdoor track, and played football.

Lornie Smith graduated from MDI High School in 1985 where he was a first team all conference punter, running back and linebacker. He also was the first team LTC conference punter his sophomore and junior years.

Gary Allen ’75 was the co-captain of the indoor track team his senior year. He coached the high school team for two years and earned six varsity letters for cross-country and indoor and outdoor track. He founded and currently directs the MDI Marathon.

Michael Westphal ’75 was the captain of the cross-country team and co-captain of the outdoor track team his senior year. He also finished fourth in the state indoor track 2-mile event.
