BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks swim team announced team awards prior to last Wednesday’s banquet at Mount Desert Island High School.
The Sharks posted a strong season against tough competition. The boys’ and girls’ teams combined for third at the YMCA state championships and second at the state’s winter championships.
“This is always a great way to finish the season,” head coach Jim Willis said. “[It was] a great for the Sharks as we continue to be the team from the island that can compete and be one of the top teams in the state.”
The team announced five boys and five girls as Most Outstanding Swimmers in their respective divisions. Wyatt Braun and Kemy Cistone (8 and under), Patrick Saltysiak and Lylah Wagstaff (9-10), Liam McKernan and Finley Smith (11-12), Brendan Graves and Cecilia Saltysiak (13-14) and T.J. Willis and Ruby Brown (senior) took home the honors.
Also awarded at the banquet were Most Improved Swimmer honors. Those distinctions went to Eli MacDonnell and Parker Richards (8 and under), J.J. Cistone and Bree Yarborough (9-1), Alex Owen and Lily Beckwith (11-12), Gwen Johnson/Rex DeMuro and Gracie Parker (13-14) and Isaac Mains and Zoe Eason (senior).
Two Sharks set individual team records this season with Braun setting the 8 and under boys’ mark in the 25-yard backstroke (18.15 seconds) and Smith setting the 11-12 girls’ mark in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.48 seconds). The 9-10 boys (200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay) and 13-14 girls (200 and 400 medley relays and 200 and 400 freestyle relays) set team relay records.
The team was also set to give awards Wednesday for its annual Sharks Aquathon. Willis said the team has collected more than $24,000 thus far and is still looking to raise more.
Spring team qualifying began Monday, April 29, with summer team qualifying set to begin June 10. The team has three camps set for the summer: the Lenny DeMuro Swim Camp (July 8-12), Open Water Camp (July 15-18) and Water Sports Camp (Aug. 5-9).
