WINSLOW — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ soccer team ended its season on Tuesday after falling to Winslow High School 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Class B playoffs.
The game remained scoreless until 16:09 remained in the first half when Winslow’s Jake Warn scored. He added a second goal with 11:49 left in the half.
The Black Raiders added one more, by Matt Phillips, at 21:49 of the second half. MDI had a few chances to score but could not capitalize on them.
“Both teams were ready to play, and it showed in a ‘leave it all on the field’ 80 minutes,” said Head Coach Tyler Frank. “Our scouting was accurate in their attack and defense – they just had more good than we did. I was proud of the boys.
“They worked hard, played their best and represented MDI soccer well. Winslow showed why they were ranked No. 2, with a chemistry of players who have played together for a long time.”
The Trojans’ hard work paid off at the end of the season with a five-game winning streak.
Frank said he was most proud of the team for something they set out to do at the beginning of the year.
Each season, he asks the players to write down a personal goal for the season, and the majority answers the same way: “Beat Ellsworth.”
This year, the Trojans did just that – outscoring Ellsworth 2-1 for the first time in over a decade.
MDI also had two Class B first team PVC All Conference players, Joe Grubb and Owen Mild – and two second team All Conference players, seniors Nick Ressel and Eli McDonald.
MDI 2, OT 0
In the preliminary round, MDI topped Old Town 2-0 last Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class B North championships.
It was a scoreless first half as both the Trojans and the Coyotes struggled to connect.
But the second half belonged to the Trojans. With just nine minutes into the second half, Joe Grubb knocked one in on a direct penalty kick.
MDI dominated possession for the remainder of the game. Eli McDonald scored the winning goal on a direct kick with 5:26 remaining.
