BAR HARBOR — The late Mary Parker of Bar Harbor is the inspiration for a new 5k road race organized by Island Connections. The Running For Rides Mary Parker Memorial 5k is set for Saturday, Oct. 15.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. at Pat’s Pizza in Bar Harbor and the race begins at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $20 for adults 18 and up and $10 for children under 17.

The course starts and ends at Pat’s Pizza, goes down Main St. to Park St., up to Kebo and back again. There will be prizes for the first three overall finishes and for the top two finishers in each age group.

As the transportation coordinator at Island Connections from 2006-2012, Parker recruited volunteers and organized and secured drivers to transport seniors and those with disabilities around the island. Parker was beloved for her sweet demeanor and kindness.

In 2012, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to leave her post at Island Connections. She lost her battle with the disease in 2015. The race is to honor Parker’s memory in the community and raise funds to help sustain Island Connections.

The day of the race would have been Mary and husband David’s 37th anniversary. David Parker has been a volunteer driver since 2004. He said his wife’s favorite part of her job were the connections she made with neighbors and hearing their life stories. She embodied the organization’s motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”
