BAR HARBOR — The varsity basketball season is over, but the sport will continue to take center stage in Hancock County in the coming weeks as two of the state’s biggest offseason tournaments commence.
The first tournament begins Friday, March 8, when the Sheriff’s Cup begins play in Ellsworth. Games will begin at 4 p.m. when the Mount Desert Island A boys and B girls take on Team Brick Layers and Peninsula PP, respectively, with the B boys taking on County at 5:15 and the A girls facing Glenburn at 9. Games will continue all day Saturday and conclude Sunday with the championships at 1.
The MDI A team will be looking to defend its title at the Sheriff’s Cup, which it won last year with a record of 6-0. Elena Alderman, Leah Carroll, Elizabeth Jones, Emily Carter and Olivia Gray played varsity basketball for the Trojans this season after leading the A team to the Sheriff’s Cup crown a year ago.
The following weekend will mark this year’s edition of the annual Great Harbor Shootout. Games will begin Friday, March 15, and conclude Sunday, March 17.
Last year, the MDI A girls took home first place in their division at the tournament as the varsity boys placed second behind Hermon. The tournament brought more than 1,000 players and their families to the area for games played at various schools in Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Trenton and Ellsworth.
