ELLSWORTH – In their first win of the league season, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team defeated the Ellsworth Eagles 5-0 Thursday afternoon. Senior Thomas Paola pitched a complete game shut-out for the Trojans, a three-hitter with no walks.

MDI bats were working better than they have yet, against formidable Ellworth pitcher Conor Maguire. Maguire was 2014 Player of the Year in the league. The Trojans’ first run came in the fourth inning. Ellsworth had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Paola struck out two and Cordell Soper at first caught a flyball to end the inning and protect their lead.

Jacob Mitchell led off the seventh inning with a strong double to left field. Riley Swanson, Paola and Seth Young followed with solid hits bringing in two runs. Dylan Collin bunted to bring in Paola for the third run of the inning. The final score was 7-0.

“We hit great today,” MDI coach Mike Swanson said. “We made some really good plays in the outfield, too,”  Jack Sasner robbed Maguire of a hit in the sixth with a catch deep in center field. “He dove and caught it over his head. It was a hell of a catch.”
