ELLSWORTH — Champions in two divisions were crowned at the 34th annual Maine State Team Karate Championships held here recently by Tracy’s Karate-Ju-Jitsu.

The winning black belt team included Lauren Noyes and Shawn Murphy, both of Ellsworth, Malorie Young of Bar Harbor, Ed Hatch of Bucksport and captain Eric Tracy of Yarmouth.

The winning team in the division of brown belts and lower ranks included Curtis Brown of Deer Isle, Emily Lane of Island Falls, Felicia DeMerchant of New Brunswick, Malachi Fitzherbert of Mars Hill and captain William Wilson of Ellsworth.

More than 200 martial artists from throughout Maine and into Canada competed in teams of five members, each of which included men, women and children.

The tournament, the 97th such event held by Masters Dennis and Karen Tracy since 1977, also included individual kumite sparring events, in which winners from previous tournaments competed to championship honors.

Trophies honoring Students of the Year from the nine dojos in Tracy’s Institute of Self Defense and nine others in northern Maine and Canada also were presented, along with awards for best attitude, most improved and most dedicated students and most supportive parents.

Scholarships totaling $1,200, funded by annual dues paid by all black and brown belts, were present to Young, Matt Coty of Presque Isle and Amanda Charette of Bangor to help further their education.

Over the past 45 years, the organization has contributed more than $100,000 in scholarships to deserving students.

The next tournament to be held by Tracy’s Karate-Ju-Jitsu will be on April 11, 2015, at Bucksport High School.
