BAR HARBOR — Nathaniel Hinckley and Karen Campbell were the winners of the second annual Mount Desert Island YMCA Bar Benders Association powerlifting competition Sunday. Chris Candage of Bar Harbor, who helped organize the event, finished second overall in the men’s competition.
Four women and 25 men ages 17-70 participated in the event in seven age divisions and nine weight classes. Each did three tries at a dead lift and a bench press.
“It was a pretty wild experience with the Winterport powerlifting team there,” said Scott Henggeler of Bar Harbor, another volunteer.
Seth Reed of Bucksport had the best deadlift of the day with 600 pounds. Rob Golgano of Belfast and Reed each bench pressed 440 pounds. Candage tied Reed for second best bench, given a weight class difference, with 385 pounds.
Campbell was the overall winner on the women’s side. She bench pressed 275 pounds and deadlifted 405 pounds. Lauren Lugan was the women’s runner up with a 155-pound bench and a 320-pound deadlift.
In the 14-18 men’s age division, Calvin Simmon was the winner with a 170-pound bench and a 385-pound deadlift. Mount Desert Island High School senior Sandy Henggeler was the runner-up in the bench press with 245 pounds. MDI junior Dylan Collin was second in the deadlift with 405 pounds.
Alex Johnson was the winner of the 19-24 age division. Frank Mora won the 20-29s by default. Greg Noble was the winner among the 30-39 group. Sam Winter won both events in the 40-49 division with Candage second in both.
