Canoe race champs

ELLSWORTH — A canoe race to benefit the Maine Heritage Orchard of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association was held Sunday on the Union River in Ellsworth. Paddlers in both kayaks and open canoes began below the Graham Lake dam and finished at the Ellsworth marina, where a potluck and mussel feast was ready, organizer Angus Deighan said.

Ray Wirth, Dan Baumert and Leslie Gregory were winners in kayak classes. Susannah and Jeff Owen won the open canoe double-mixed racing class. Fiona Hamilton and Chris Mares were first in the two-person recreational class. Tammy Kelly and Ander Thebaud won the women’s rec class. Paddling single canoes, Chris Dalton won the rec class and Charlie Smith was first in racing. Hannah Rubin won the open canoe high school division.

Megan McOsker, Ava Drennan and Noreen Hogan paddled together in one canoe, winning the “open” class.
