MDI wallops Raiders 13-2

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity softball team had a strong showing Tuesday night in its first preseason matchup. The Lady Trojans walloped the visiting Washington Academy Raiders 13-2 in seven and a half innings.

Ace pitcher Lindsey McEachern played in six innings including a no-hitter in the third, while Emily York pitched one inning.

“Both pitched extremely well for us,” said Assistant Coach Margie Phelps.

All of the players had the opportunity to step up to the plate.

McEachern, Lindsey Dyer and Maddie Thornton each had one hit, and Hannah Chamberlain had two hits.

The young team displayed speed, quick-thinking and defensive skill in the infield. On offense, the girls looked confident at bat and fast while rounding and stealing bases.

Head Coach Jamey Lewis tried out players in different positions and combinations, which shows how much depth this year’s team has.

The players were vocal and supportive among each other throughout the game by cheering on their at-bat teammates and their pitchers on the mound.

Tuesday’s scrimmage is a good sign for the Trojans, who suffered a disappointing season last year.

Next up for the Trojans is a scrimmage set for Thursday, April 13, at home against Sumner Memorial High School. MDI will head to Orono High School for a matchup on Friday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, April 15, the girls will play against Lawrence High School, Hampden Academy and Cony High School in a round-robin tournament at Brewer High School beginning at 10 a.m. MDI will again face off against Washington Academy on Tuesday, April 18, at noon.

The Trojans’ first game of the regular season is set for Thursday, April 20, at 4:30 p.m. in Bar Harbor against Bucksport High School.

MDI will have its work cut out for them against the seven-time state championship team from Bucksport.

The Golden Bucks won the Northern Maine championship last spring before falling to Madison Area Memorial High School in the state championship.
