BAR HARBOR — Spring sports practices have now begun for all Mount Desert Island athletes, and those athletes also know when and where they’ll be competing in their first competitions of the 2021 campaign.

Mount Desert Island’s baseball and softball teams will begin competition with five preseason games, the first of which will be held next week. The baseball team will begin its preseason slate at home against Penobscot Valley at 4 p.m. next Thursday, April 8, and the softball team will play its first preseason contest at home against Belfast at 11 a.m. next Saturday, April 10.

Both teams will then begin their 16-game regular season schedules with home doubleheaders against Presque Isle on April 24. First pitch is scheduled for noon for both doubleheaders with the second contests set to begin at 2 p.m.

MDI’s other baseball and softball contests include three games against Ellsworth, two games against Brewer, Caribou (doubleheader), John Bapst and Old Town and individual contests against George Stevens Academy and Washington Academy. The baseball postseason will begin with play-in games June 5 and conclude June 19 with the Class B championship game at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

The MDI baseball and softball teams began spring sessions with throwing drills for pitchers and catchers last week. The teams held tryouts Monday and Tuesday and were set to continue with the first practices Wednesday.

“[I’m] feeling pretty good about what we have so far,” head baseball coach Andy Pooler said of his squad “[We have a] good mix of seniors and younger players.”

The MDI track team will begin the season April 24 with a home meet against GSA, Sumner, Washington Academy and Bangor. The Trojans also have meets May 1 (home), May 8 (Brewer), May 15 (home), May 22 (Old Town), May 28 (Penobscot Valley Conference championships at Hampden Academy) and June 5 (state championships; TBD).

“I feel great [about the season],” MDI head track coach Aaron Long said. “We have a large high character group that so far has shown they are willing and want to work for high goals. We’ll see where we ultimately go from here, but we are off to an incredibly exciting start.”

MDI’s tennis team will be the first to begin the regular season when it does so on the road against Hampden Academy at 2 p.m. April 23. The Trojans’ 12-game schedule also includes two contests each against Ellsworth, Bangor, Belfast, Brewer, Washington Academy and one additional match against Hampden.

The Maine Principals’ Association’s tennis singles tournament is set to begin May 12 (location TBD) and resume May 21, 22 and 24 with contests at Lewiston High School. Playoff contests will begin June 1 and conclude June 12 with the state championships June 12 in Lewiston.
