MDI Track Team Runs Strong

ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ track team demonstrated its depth last week with individuals taking top-five positions in all but five events in a meet held Dec. 28.

Shot putter Trevor Alley led the MDI boys in their top event, throwing a distance of 47 feet, 11.50 inches. That throw beat his previous personal record throw of 45 feet, 11 inches, which he achieved in the last meet. Alley’s dominating performance was followed by teammate Chapin McFarland, who placed second by throwing a distance of 43 feet and one half inch, also a personal best. Ezra Hallet placed fourth in that event, throwing a distance of just over 39 feet.

The MDI boys’ team also won points in the one-mile long distance event. Max Mason placed first in a time of 5:16.60, nearly five seconds before the next closest competitor from Hermon High School, Josh Zapsky, who finished in a time of 5:21.46.

Brandon Murphy and Will Richard placed first and second in the 400-meter run in times of 55.46 and 56.42. Murphy also placed fifth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.11.

MDI placed third overall.

While the MDI girls’ team enjoyed less depth then the MDI boys, they also placed third overall. Nora Hubbell, one of the top distance runners at the high school, led her team in points with three first place finishes. “That’s a really hard thing to do in track, especially in distance,” said coach Witham.

Hubbell placed first in the one-mile event in a time of 5:53.56. She also placed first in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:38.15, more than 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Hermon High School.

Hubbell won the two-mile event in a time of 12:50.81, followed by teammate Caroline Driscoll, who placed second in that event in a time of 13:24.51. Driscoll also place second in the one-mile event in a time of 6:12.47.

Madeline Cook also earned points for the lady Trojans by throwing a distance of 27-03 in shot put to place fifth in that event.

The MDI boys’ and girls’ track teams are next scheduled to compete on Jan. 5 beginning at 10 a.m. at the University of Maine, Orono field house.
