MDI softball defeats GSA Eagles

BAR HARBOR – In a decisive win Thursday at home, the Mount Desert Island High School softball team ended a losing streak and improved their prospects for postseason play. The defeated the George Stevens Academy Eagles 10-5. “They looked relaxed today,” coach Bruce Walls said, “like they know they can win.” That was different from games against top teams Old Town and Hermon in the last two weeks, he said, when the Lady Trojans “got all tensed up and started making mistakes.”

Junior Aubrie Boyce pitched the complete game victory, throwing 83 strikes for 6 strikeouts and 54 balls. Haley Littlefield played catcher, filling in for Avalon Kerley who was injured in the last game.

MDI had a comfortable 4-0 lead after three innings on hits by Cassidy Parady, Ali Bierman, Molly Carroll and Alaina Duley including a triple from Carroll that became a home run on an an error. GSA tied it up 4-4 in the top of the fourth despite two strikeouts. The Lady Trojans added three more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.  Carroll led off the sixth with a double, stole third and came in for a run on a passed ball. GSA had one run in the top of the seventh and Boyce struck out the last batter with a runner on third.

Carroll had three runs in the game and Duley had three RBIs.

MDI is set to host Ellsworth Tuesday at 4:00 for the final regular season game.
