PORTLAND — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity sailing team took fifth place at the annual Bulldog Classic Regatta hosted by the Southern Maine team at SailMaine in Portland on Saturday, May 21. The varsity team had a total score of 103 points.
The junior varsity squad of MDI sailors scored 32 points to land a second-place finish behind Yarmouth High School.
Sailing conditions cooperated with a steady 10 to 15-knot southern breeze that continued for most of the day.
“We did very well with the junior varsity team. The varsity had an up-and-down day,” said head Coach George Deans.
The pairing of sailors in the varsity team was Kincaid MacCulloch and Lily Anderson; Chris Booher and Chloe Vincenty; and Connor Ratcliff and Kevin Elk.
For the junior varsity team, the pairing was of Alec Fisichella and Lucas Ingebritson; Hutchin Gerrish and Cala Coffman; with John Rush and Kit Gurin as substitutes.
Jack Stroud of MDI paired with sailors from George Stevens Academy to help complete their team.
MDI High’s sailors are preparing to host the Great Harbor Regatta set at the MDI Community Sailing Center in Southwest Harbor on Saturday, May 28.
The first race in the two-division fleet-racing format regatta is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
