MDI girls top John Bapst for signature win

BANGOR — One of the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ basketball team’s biggest wins yet came in an all-too-familiar place.

It’s been nearly a year now since the MDI girls’ basketball team won the Class B North championship game at the Cross Insurance Center. Friday’s return to the scene of the Trojans’ regional title celebrations didn’t have quite as much at stake, but for a team in need of a boost in the Class B North standings, the result still went a long way.

MDI earned a signature win Friday night with a 49-37 victory over John Bapst at the Cross Insurance Center. The victory in the pivotal Class B North showdown completed a regular season sweep of the Crusaders and saw the Trojans move from ninth place to sixth place in the Class B North standings.

MDI (9-4) jumped out to a 14-6 lead through one quarter of play before carrying a 30-17 advantage into the locker room. The Trojans’ offense fell off slightly in the second half, but John Bapst couldn’t fight its way back into the game as MDI claimed a vital road win.

Elena Alderman notched 16 points and eight rebounds in the win, and Elizabeth Jones added 13 points and nine rebounds for MDI. Rachelle Swanson joined her teammates in double figures with 12 points while adding two rebounds and four steals.

MDI was scheduled to play on the road against Ellsworth (7-4) on Wednesday. The Trojans will host Presque Isle (11-3) at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 24, and Caribou at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

MDI’s Elizabeth Jones goes for a basket against John Bapst’s Jayda Smith during a high school girls’ basketball game Jan. 17 at the Cross Insurance Center. The win vaulted MDI from ninth place to sixth place in the Class B North standings.
