OLD TOWN — Mount Desert Island High School tennis teams played away at Old Town Monday, May 13. Girls’ swept Old Town 5-0 but the boys’ team fell 4-1.
On the girls’ side, MDI’s Regitze Jacobsen defeated Taylor Sullivan of Old Town 8-0 in first singles. In second singles, Katherine Hoff of MDI won 8-6 over Old Town’s Hailey Hodson. For third singles, Austria Morehouse overtook Sydney Loring of Old Town 8-5.
In first doubles, MDI’s Lelia Weir and Olivia Chandler won 8-0 over Brook Sosson and Lily Shaw-Davis. Addy Smith and Avonlea Brown of MDI defeated Old Town’s Natalie Storman and Maddie Huffstuttler 9-8 (9-7) in second doubles.
In first singles, Nick Harding fell 8-1 to Old Town’s Caleb Braley. Reider Watson gave MDI the team’s only win with an 8-5 over Jacob Cyr of Old Town in second singles. For third singles, Luiz Estacio fell 8-3 to Old Town’s Brady Georgia.
For first doubles, MDI’s Marshall Reiff and Fernando Avalos lost 8-2. In second doubles, Jack Hogdon and Whit Chaplin of MDI played to an 8-5 loss.
“I have been truly impressed with the work ethic that all of my players have put forth throughout the season,” head coach Tyler Hunt said. He said there has been growth in both teams, both as players and people.
“MDI is fortunate to have Regitze Jacobsen moving on to the Single’s State Championships. She currently has not lost a match this year and continues to improve as the season progresses,” said Hunt.
He added that he has high hopes for the future of the teams.
“We have a young team [with] a lot of sophomores and freshman and will continue to grow and develop younger student-athletes who live on the island.”
Last Wednesday, May 8, MDI played away matches at Foxcroft Academy. Girls’ and boys’ teams both fell 4-1.
Jacobsen gave MDI its only match win, besting Foxcroft Academy’s Olivia Wesley 8-0. In second singles, Hoff fell 8-2 to Cheyenne Skomans of Foxcroft. In third singles, MDI’s Weir fell to Maren O’Connell 8-1.
In girls’ first doubles, MDI’s Chandler and Brown fell 8-5 to Kaylee Taylor and Kiya Cook. In second doubles, Mei Cook and Heather Finger also fell 8-5.
In boys’ first singles, Harding fell 8-2 to Jerry Zhoe of Foxcroft. Watson of MDI defeated Foxcroft’s Sawyer McCarthy 8-2 in second singles. Third singles led to a loss of 8-5 for Estacio against Judwig Heck of Foxcroft.
In first doubles, Trevor Morrison and Avalos fell 8-4. Second doubles led to an 8-4 loss for Reiff and Ashton Lozano.
