MDI falls in softball opener

BUCKSPORT — The Mount Desert Island High School softball team was defeated in its first game of the 2019 season last Thursday when it fell 8-1 against Bucksport.

After Bucksport’s Mikayla Tripp struck out two MDI batters in the top of the first, the Golden Bucks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Brittney Dewitt. Tripp then struck out the side in the top of the second, and the home team doubled its lead when Victoria Watkins’ slap single scored Zoe Hosford from third base.

MDI (0-1) threatened in the top of the third inning when it put runners on second and third with two outs, but Tripp completed another three-strikeout inning to get herself out of the jam. After she struck out the first two batters to begin the fourth, Dewitt made a diving catch on the edge of the infield grass to complete a 1-2-3 inning.
