MDI Co-Ed Softball League season reaches halfway mark

BAR HARBOR — Two top contenders have emerged as the Mount Desert Island Co-Ed Softball League has begun the second half of the 2019 season following the Fourth of July holiday break.

As Monday, GT Outhouses and Edlund Ironworks topped the league standings with records of 5-0 and 4-0, respectively. The league powerhouses, which met for the championship last season, were the only teams over the .500 mark.

At 3-3, the Runabouts and Pat’s Pizza were tied for third place in the seven-team league. The Rock Stars (2-3), Bug Pickers (1-4) and Somes Sounders (1-5) rounded out the rest of the standings.

The season began June 3 with GT Outhouse beating the Bug Pickers 11-8 at Tremont Consolidated School and the Runabouts edging Pat’s Pizza 14-7. The following week, the Runabouts fell to the Somes Sounders 27-25 in the highest-scoring game of the season.

In recent play, Pat’s Pizza set the season mark for biggest margin of victory when it topped the Rock Stars 24-7 on June 26. Yet that mark was broken July 1 as GT Outhouse beat the Rock Stars 22-2 in the final game before the holiday break.

League play was scheduled to resume Monday with GT Outhouse taking on Bug Pickers in Bar Harbor and Runabouts battling Pat’s Pizza in Tremont. The regular season will conclude Aug. 5 with the playoffs beginning Aug. 7 and the championship game scheduled for Aug. 14.
