MDI bested in doubleheader

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School volleyball team fell to both Greely and Gorham high schools Saturday during a doubleheader at home.

“At times, we played really great, and we showed we can play with these teams,” Head Coach Corey Papadopoli said following the matches. “But our biggest issue is overcoming errors. We had a lot of unforced errors that hurt us in both matches.”

The Trojans first faced the undefeated Greely Rangers.

In that match, Greely won in three sets 25-19, 25-17 and 25-12.

Alaina Duley had six kills, four assists and eight digs. Mackenzie Hanna had two aces, three kills, 11 assists and six digs.

Emma Forthofer had two aces, one kill, nine digs and 32 service receptions, while Grace Higgins had five kills and four digs.

After an hour-long break, the Trojans went up against the Gorham Rams.

MDI came out strong, winning its first set of the day 25-20, but the Trojans wouldn’t stay ahead for long. The Rams won the second set 25-19.

In the third set, MDI made several errors, such as hitting the net and over-serving for a loss of 25-12, the team’s biggest point differential of the season.

The girls came back from that loss and kept on Gorham’s heels, but ultimately lost by just two points, 25-23.

Duley had four aces, 12 kills and two assists. Higgins had five aces, six kills and two digs. Hanna had one ace, two kills, 21 assists and six digs, while Emma Watras had one ace and three kills.

Earlier in the week, MDI hosted Machias Memorial High School and beat the team in three sets, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-19.

In that match, Higgins had seven aces, seven kills, two digs and 12 rotation points. Hanna had four aces, four kills and 11 assists. Duley had one ace, four kills and eight assists. Maddy Shields had five kills and one dig.

Papadopoli said that since the team has no more conference games, the Trojans are now focused on the state championships.

The preliminary round is set for Oct. 20.

“We are thinking ahead. We are getting ready, and we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said the coach.

The Trojans will next host Ellsworth High School in its final home game of the regular season Friday, Oct. 7, at 5:30 p.m.

Before the match, the MDI seniors and their parents will be honored.

“It’s to say goodbye to the seniors and thank their parents,” Papadopoli said.

Every senior, including nonstarters, will play in their final home match.
