BAR HARBOR — Last week was full of action for the Mount Desert Island High School baseball team as the Trojans played games on three consecutive days to prepare themselves for the start of the regular season.
MDI faced Orono on Wednesday before traveling to Bucksport on Thursday and closing out the week against Woodland on Friday. The Trojans earned a 2-1 record on the week with victories against Orono and Woodland and a loss against Bucksport.
“At this point right now, we are trying to take advantage of our limited time outside,” Head Coach Andy Pooler said. “The three games in a row gave us a good test to see where our pitching depth is, which I am happy with.”
At home against Orono on Wednesday, senior Matt Perconti put his pitching prowess on display with seven strikeouts and no hits allowed. He also had a hit and two RBIs at the plate in the Trojans’ 5-3 win over the defending Class C champion Red Riots.
The following day, Alden Fournier and Sam Keblinsky had two hits each as the Trojans fell in a 5-2 loss against the Golden Bucks. Yet MDI bounced back at home Friday as Sam Mitchell struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits to lead the Trojans to a 7-0 win over Woodland.
MDI is scheduled to open the regular season at home against George Stevens Academy today, Thursday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. The Trojans will then host Ellsworth in rivalry action at that time on Tuesday, April 24.
“We are doing some really good things defensively and with the bats,” Pooler said. “There are plenty of things to tighten up before the real stuff starts, but the group is hungry and ready for the challenge in front of us.”
