MDI athletes garner conference honors

BAR HARBOR — Three Mount Desert Island High School student athletes earned top honors in the Penobscot Valley Conference in their sports this season. Many more were named to all-conference teams.

Senior Steven Hanscom was named baseball pitcher of the year. Senior Madeline Cook and junior Luke Horton, MDI’s number one singles tennis players, were selected as players of the year in girls’ and boys’ tennis.

In baseball, Jon Phelps is on the all-conference first team, and Hanscom was named to the second team. Softball players Shelby O’Neil, Hannah Shaw and Sierra Myrick were named to the first team.

In tennis, senior Sierra Bloom and junior Mackenzie Myers made the first team for doubles.

The all-conference first team for track and field includes Ralph Magnani for 400-meter dash, Chapin McFarland for shot put, and Lydia Dacorte, Caroline Driscoll, Waylon Henggeler and Isabel Erickson for the 4×800-meter relay. On the second team, Erickson was named for 800-meter run and high jump, Driscoll for 800-meter run and 1600-meter run, and Henggeler for 3200-meter run.

The boys’ second team includes Brandon Murphy, Matt Hanna, Josh Bloom and Ralph Magnagni for 4×400-meter relay, Murphy for 100-meter dash, Aaron Miller and Will Richard for high jump, Ryan Bender for long jump and Jalique Keene for javelin.
