Lady Trojans notch a strong preseason

BREWER — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity softball team went 3-2 in preseason matchups. Ahead of opening day Thursday, head Coach Jamey Lewis, who is coaching her first season, is pleased with the performance of her squad.

“I’m really impressed with how they’re playing,” she said. “Wins or losses were not what I was looking for in scrimmage games; it was how they were playing. I’m impressed with their attitudes and hustle and how they are being good teammates and just helping each other out, whatever the play is.”

MDI 5 – Stearns 2

MDI defeated Stearns High School on Saturday, April 16, at Brewer at the end of a three-game day. Senior pitcher Aubrie Boyce pitched four of the seven innings, letting in two runs in her first and then holding them scoreless for the next three.

“She didn’t pitch a lot for us this season, but she did a really good job for us,” said Lewis.

Brewer 2 –MDI 1

In a close matchup on Saturday afternoon, MDI fell 2-1 to the Brewer Witches. Even though the scoreboard reflected a loss for the Trojans, Lewis said several MDI players stood out.

Lindsey McEachern pitched five innings and racked up seven strikes. “She pitched a heck of a game,” said Lewis. Senior captain Cassidy Parady stepped up in the field and put forth a strong pitching and batting performance. “She caught everything that was coming to her, and her bat was on fire all day long.”

Hampden 9 – MDI 2

The Lady Trojans fell 9-2 to the Hampden Broncos Saturday morning. Lewis said that even though the squad wasn’t “the sharpest first thing in the morning,” their performance improved as the day went on.

“There were little things that we kept fixing throughout the game, which is really good to see from my side because they’re learning from their errors,” she said. “I like that we are doing a good job of fixing our mistakes.”

MDI 9 – GSA 0

The Trojan team notched a 9-0 victory over the George Stevens Academy Eagles at home on Thursday, April 14.

McEachern was on the pitching mound in the short innings and notched multiple strikes. “Her pitches were exactly where she wanted them in the whole game, which is very impressive,” said Lewis.

MDI 11-Washington Academy 4

In the first preseason game, MDI took down Washington Academy 11-4 at home on Wednesday, April 13.

Maddie Thornton pitched four innings for the Trojans.

The team begins its season with a game at Bucksport High School today, Thursday, at 4 p.m.

Lewis is pleased about where her team stands right now on their defense and with the “outfielders covering the bases.” It is their offensive end that she is looking to improve.

“It’s mostly just our hitting that we need to get going now,” she said. “We have some improvement to do, and that’s as much on me as it on them. We’re going to work on it and try to get better as the season goes.”
