Island runners finish strong at Bridge the Gap

BUCKSPORT — This year’s running of the Bridge the Gap Race was held Saturday morning, and runners from the Mount Desert Island area were among the many who traveled to the Hancock-Waldo county line for the two-race event.

Runners enter the home stretch of the Bridge the Gap 3-mile race on April 6 in Bucksport. The race began in Prospect, went through Verona Island and finished in downtown Bucksport.

A total of 222 runners competed in the 10-mile version of the race, which took runners across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and all the way around Verona Island before finishing in downtown Bucksport. Erik McCarthy of Old Town was the overall race winner with a finishing time of 53 minutes, 45 seconds.

Bar Harbor’s Judson Cake finished third overall in the 10-mile race with a time of 55:08. Other top-20 finishers were Jarly Bobadilla of Tremont (10th) and Bryant Perkins of Mount Desert (14th). Ava Dowling of Bar Harbor (48th) was the top local female finisher.

The 3-mile victory went to Darren Winchenbach of Saco, who crossed the finish line in 18:35. Christopher Heel of Mount Desert crossed the finish line in 22:07 to place 23rd overall and to finish as the top local runner overall. 12-year old Jay Haney of Mount Desert (25th) and 13-year-old Lily James of Bar Harbor (29th) also finished in the top 30 of the 289-runner field.

2019 marked the eighth edition of the race.

Race organizers Crow Athletics are urging contestants to register for next year’s event as soon as it opens; this year’s field reached capacity.
