Great Harbor Shootout feeds basketball fever

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Maine’s largest postseason high school and junior high school basketball tournament is coming up this weekend.

The Harbor House Community Service Center and The First will present the 24th annual Great Harbor Shootout from Friday, March 18, through Sunday, March 20.

Eighty-three girls’ and boys’ teams are signed up for more than 150 games that each year brings hundreds of people to the area.

All event proceeds benefit youth sports programming at Harbor House. “It enables us to offer those programs at a highly reduced rate,” event coordinator Diana Novella said.

Teams will be organized into four categories: junior high school boys, junior high school girls, high school boys and high school girls.

The tournament is organized for double-elimination style play: two losses, and a team is out.

High School Boys North will compete on Friday at the Mount Desert Island YMCA in Bar Harbor with the first game at 4 p.m. and at Ellsworth Middle School at 6 p.m.

High School Boys South will compete on Friday at the Mount Desert Elementary School in Northeast Harbor with the first game at 4 p.m.

High School Girls North will compete on Friday at the Trenton Elementary School with the first game at 4 p.m. and at Ellsworth Middle School at 4 p.m.

High School Girls South will play on Friday at the Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor with the first game at 4 p.m. and at Ellsworth Middle School at 5 p.m.

Junior High Boys will play Friday at the Mount Desert Island High School court A with the first game at 4 p.m.

Junior High Girls will play Friday at the Mount Desert Island High School court B with the first game at 4 p.m.
