Girls tennis edged by Camden, boys survive to advance in playoffs

CAMDEN — The Mount Desert Island High School Trojans varsity girls tennis team ended their season on Wednesday, June 1 after losing to Camden Hills 3-2.

The loss eliminated them from the playoffs. A win by the MDI High boys varsity the previous day pushed the boys further in the postseason.

Like in their previous game against John Bapst, MDI’s singles and doubles players split their matches with the singles players all losing their contests and the doubles players notching wins.

First singles player India Janes lost to Camden Hills player Jana Spieker 6-0, 6-0. MDI’s Molly Corson lost to Katie Vannorsall 6-2, 6-2 in second singles. Ellie Bridgers fell to Naomi Landy 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at third singles.

In the first doubles match, Emily and Olivia McCarthy beat Camden Hill’s Kelsie Merril and Kassie Krol 6-3, 6-2. In second doubles, Trojans Delaney Smith and Eliza Schleif defeated Vivian Priestly and Charlotte Messer 6-2, 6-3.

“It was a really good season,” Coach Ben Rowell said. “Having three new kids come in and play singles in the first year, you might have a harder time winning just cause you don’t have the experience.

“We know we’re always going to be pretty strong in doubles and we were this year,” he continued. “We had two really solid doubles teams.”

Rowell added that he was proud of the girls for all their hard work this season and of the way they played all season long.

The girls ended their season with a record of 10-2.

MDI 5 – Presque Isle 0

Kaleb Payson defeated Presque Isle’s Denny Young in the first singles matchup 6-2, 6-2.

In second singles, Teddy Geary defeated Byron Wilson 6-2, 6-4, and in third singles, Drake Janes defeated Andre Daigle 6-2, 6-3.

“Singles wise, my three boys are just playing” great, Coach Ben Rowell said. “Teddy played a great match.”

These were big wins for both Payson and Janes, who both were knocked out in the first round of the state singles tennis tournament this weekend.

MDI’s first doubles team of Jimmy Carroll and Max Craigo defeated the Wildcats’ Colin Daigle and Jordan Bonville, losing the first set 1-6, but bringing themselves back with wins in the last two sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Gabe Michael and Derek Collin beat Mason Young and Tyler Ayotte in the second doubles matchup, with the sets ending 7-6, 7-4, 6-2.

“They [Carroll and Craigo] struggled in the beginning, and then they were able to pull out a couple close sets, so that was really great,” Rowell said.

The MDI’s boys’ team will be playing John Bapst on June 2 at Camden Hills in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

State singles

Three MDI High tennis players lost in the first round of the state singles tennis tournament this weekend, with one of the matches ending in a tiebreaker.

Drake Janes fell to Alec Cyr from Caribou High School. Janes lost the first set 2-6 but won the second 6-1 and took the third set to a tiebreaker, which Cyr won 7-6(7-5).

Kaleb Payson fell to Viktor Schwarz of Thornton Academy in Saco, losing in three sets with scores of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

India Janes lost her match to Kathryn Pare of Greely High School in Cumberland, with both sets going to Pare with scores of 6-2, 6-2.

“It is a great accomplishment for them, though, to be one of the top 48 in the state,” Rowell stated.

In the finals of the tournament, Nick Mathieu of Mount Ararat High School in Topsham defeated Dariy Vykhodtsev of Thornton Academy, going 6-4, 4-6 and 6-2 in the match. Julia Brogan of Falmouth High School defeated Rosemary Campanella of Wells High School 6-1, 6-0.
