BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School outdoor track team posted a strong start to the 2019 season Monday at Hampden Academy as the girls’ team took second place and the boys placed third.
On the girls’ side, the team of Katelyn Osborne, Hannah St. Amand, Olivia Watson and Cassidy Hanscom took first in the 4-by-800 relay to begin the day.
Beatrice Amuso claimed victory in the 100-meter hurdles for MDI with a time of 19.89 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, MDI swept the top-three spots as Zoe Olson took first, Olivia Johnson placed second and St. Amand finished third. Sophomore Marilyn Sawyer ran the 200-meter dash in 29.22 seconds to place first of 46 competitors in the field.
Elijah Joyce ran away from the field in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles as his time of 16.04 seconds was 2.04 better than that of the second-place finisher, Hampden’s Conor O’Kendley. Joyce then won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.83 seconds.
In the discus throw, Gilbert Isaacs (140 feet) and Archer Hill (113 feet, 6 inches) placed first and second, respectively, in the 43-person field. The two finished in the same positions in the shot put. Junior Ben Freudig cleared 9 feet to win the pole vault for the Trojans.
As a team, the MDI boys scored 106 points to finish ahead of Old Town, George Stevens Academy, Houlton, Penquis Valley and Fort Kent. The girls racked up 108 points, 11 behind first-place Old Town and ahead of Caribou, Hampden, GSA, Penquis Valley, Houlton, Fort Kent, Greater Houlton Christian and Narraguagus.
MDI’s next meet will be Friday, May 3, at 3:30 p.m. at Bucksport High School.
