Girls first, boys second at county championship

BLUE HILL — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity cross-country team dominated the competition at last Saturday’s Hancock County Championships at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill.

The MDI girls’ team finished in first place, followed by GSA and Ellsworth High School.

MDI senior Tia Tardy finished first overall with a personal best time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds, more than a minute ahead of GSA’s Eliza Broughton in 18:44.

Katelyn Osborne came in second for MDI and fifth overall with a time of 19:49.

The MDI boys’ team came in second place after GSA, followed by Bucksport High School.

John Hassett of GSA came in first with a time of 15:07.

MDI’s Josh Bloom placed first for MDI and fifth overall in 17:13, followed two seconds later by sixth-place overall finisher Sean Murray in 17:15.

It wasn’t just the varsity team recording fast times.

Both the boys’ and girls’ junior varsity teams finished in first place with perfect scores. Both JV teams finished with runners in the top five spots.

“What I am really proud of is that both boys and girls JV teams had perfect scores,” said Head Coach Desiree Sirois. “It shows that we have a lot of depth.”

MDI’s Sofie Dowling finished first overall in 21:56, and Ashley Anderson finished second overall in 22:07.

For the boys, Matthew Perconti finished in first place in 18:23, and Chase McGee finished second in 18:52.

Sirois said the Trojans’ team spirit and camaraderie helped each runner.

“The whole team was at the finish line when everyone finished,” said the coach. “That camaraderie helped everyone have the best performances of the day.”

MDI next heads to Old Town on Saturday, Oct. 15, for the Class B Penobscot Valley Conference Championship.

The Trojans are familiar with the course after running in the sectional cross-country invitational last month.

“That knowledge of the course will help us plan for how we want to run the race,” said Sirois. “Each runner is stronger and more confident physically and mentally. The consistent training is paying off, and we’re seeing the effects of all their hard work manifest itself.”
