BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated John Bapst at home Tuesday 40-36.
It was a back-and-forth game in which the Trojans led 22-10 at the half. The Crusaders exploded in the third quarter, adding 17 points, nearly double their whole first-half point total, to cut the MDI lead to 29-27. The Trojans held Bapst to 9 points in the fourth quarter, and added 11 points to come up with the win, which brings the team to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore Leah Carroll led all scorers with 19 points. Rachelle Swanson added 7 points.
Houlton 48 – MDI 43
On Saturday, MDI made the long trip to Aroostook County to take on a Houlton team that has returned to the Big East Conference after two years in Class C. The Trojans led 25-21 at halftime but could not stop a late offensive surge from the Shiretowners, who came away with a 48-43 win.
Carroll had a team-high 11 points in the loss to Houlton, and Swanson joined her in double figures with 10 points. Emily Carter (seven points), Elizabeth Jones (six points), Olivia Gray (five) and Elena Alderman (four) rounded out the rest of the scoring for the Trojans.
MDI 37 – Brewer 20
Last Wednesday, MDI delivered a strong defensive performance to claim a 37-20 over visiting Brewer in the Trojans’ final preseason game. MDI limited the Trojans to just seven points in the first half.
Alderman led MDI with a game-high 10 points, seven of which came in the first quarter. Leah Carroll added nine points, Jones had six and Gray had five. Carter, Molly Ritter and Grace Witham added two apiece and Rachelle Swanson had one.
The Trojans will be on the road against Foxcroft (0-2) Friday, Dec. 13, before hosting Washington Academy on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
