Frosty 5K lives up to its name

MOUNT DESERT — Winter finally showed up on Saturday, allowing the Northeast Harbor Neighborhood House’s annual Frosty 5K to live up to its name.

Thirty-eight participants took off from the starting line in front of the Neighborhood House, with cold and cloudy skies.

Several minutes into the race, a snow squall moved through town, giving the runners another challenge in addition to the curvy and hilly course along Manchester Road.

Despite the flakes, racers were all smiles as they crossed the finish line, knowing that hot chocolate and treats awaited them inside.

Mount Desert Island High School cross-country runner Stephen Grierson finished in first place in 20 minutes, 7 seconds, followed by Steve Whalen in 20:52.

Robin Clarke was the first female finisher in 22:08, and Tricia Brown came in next for the women, with a time of 23:13.

The Frosty 5K $15 race fee went to assist Neighborhood House programs and was the first event of the day for the Northeast Harbor Christmas Festival.
