BAR HARBOR — It is a fresh start this year for the Mount Desert Island High School varsity softball team, which had a rough 2016 season after winning just two games.
There are many new faces on this year’s roster, which is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores. A shortage of players led to the decision to have just a varsity group this year and no JV team. There are four upperclassmen on the 19-player roster. But that doesn’t mean younger players are new to the sport.
“All of our players have played before, and we have a lot of good talent on the team,” said Jamey Lewis, who is in her second year as the Trojans’ head coach.
So far this preseason, Lewis has been working mostly on hitting with the team.
“My focal point this year is hitting and getting the bat around the ball,” she said. “We need to get better at hitting the ball.”
Autumn Jones, who had been the JV softball coach, and Margie Phelps will assist this spring.
Another aspect the team has been working on is defensive plays in the infield.
“We’ve been going over certain plays they are going to all need to know from bunting to covering first and second base,” said Lewis.
Although each girl has previously played softball, each coach teaches the strategies differently.
While most positions are not yet set, Lewis has decided on junior Lindsey McEachern as pitcher, a position she held last season. Other positions are still vacant.
“We are still up in the air about who will be our catcher,” said Lewis. “We have some good catchers, and so we will try them out in a couple of scrimmages to see who we think should be behind the plate.”
“They are ready for the season,” said Lewis. “We’ve got a really young team, so they’re looking forward to getting out there, and I think it will be a good season.”
Rounding out the rest of the roster is Natasha Olearcek, Alaina Duley, Maddie Thornton, Dori Lemoine, Hannah Chamberlain, Lily Cook, Emily Clark, Sami Wark, Mackenzie Dyer, Bella Galarza, Emily York, Ruby Brown, Gabbie James, Lexi Rich, Marina Parsons, Maddie Neale, Madison Jones and Hannah Hanscom.
