Fitness course designed for older adults

BAR HARBOR — A new fitness program called “EnhanceFitness” will begin at the Mount Desert Island YMCA on Monday, Jan. 15. Two classes are offered; one from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and the other from 1:45-2:45 p.m.

The class is designed specifically with older adults of any fitness level in mind, especially those with chronic conditions such as arthritis. Fitness assessments are conducted at the beginning and end of the 16-week program. Participants meet three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The hour-long class meets an older adult’s need for aerobic exercise, strength, balance and flexibility in a socially supportive setting.

The program has been nationally recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as an arthritis and fall prevention intervention, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Administration on Aging and the National Council on Aging.

The initial program will be free, and participants may join at any time during the 16-week run. Contact Mark Schoon, wellness director, at 288-3511 or [email protected]
