BAR HARBOR — A number of defensive errors combined with strong pitching and consistent hitting from opponent Ellsworth High School led the Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team to a 10-0 loss in seven innings at home on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans are now 1-1 for the season.
Juniors Stanley Grierson, Nick Stanley and Andrew Kennedy each had one single base hit.
Junior Matt Perconti pitched 5-1/3 innings, striking out four players and giving up six hits, four walks and four errors. Sophomore Derek Collin pitched 1-2/3 innings, striking out one player, giving up two hits, two walks and two errors.
Ellsworth pitchers Connor Wagstaff and Brad Smith allowed three hits in seven innings.
Brady Smith scored the first run for the Eagles at the top of the first, while Devin Grindle had a run at the top of the second. Jared Hamilton scored one run in the third inning, and Grindle scored again in the fourth.
Hamilton had the only hit in the sixth inning, but Ellsworth came away with four more runs due to three MDI errors. The Eagles topped off the scoring with a two-run double by Chris Fickett in the seventh.
“We ran into a really good pitcher [Wagstaff] who is going to be one of the top guys in the league,” said MDI Head Coach Andy Pooler.
The coach said the players ran into some issues at the start of the game and had trouble digging out.
“I was kind of disappointed in the [lack of players’] sense of urgency but it will come back,” he said. “They are competitors, and I’m not too worried about them.”
Pooler said he glimpsed some good plays, but the team wasn’t able to execute for runs.
“Sometimes you don’t play well, and tonight we just didn’t play well.” Pooler said. “Now we’ve got to wake up and get back to practice.”
The Trojans will have the chance to turn the tables when Ellsworth hosts MDI on Wednesday, May 31, at 4:15 p.m.
“Ellsworth is going to be very good, and we will just meet them down the road,” Pooler said.
