Dow honored with national award

BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island High School Student Activities Director Bunky Dow is being recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) with its Distinguished Service Award.

Dow is one of 11 athletic administrators nationwide to receive the award, which will be presented Dec. 18 at the National Athletic Directors Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

He was nominated in April by the Maine chapter of the NIAAA. A statement announcing the award called Dow “the embodiment of an athletic administrator, providing leadership and displaying an eagerness to improve his league and state on a consistent basis.”

Dow has been the athletic director at MDI since 1990. As athletic director, he has led renovations to the school’s gymnasium, track and tennis courts. He also established the school’s hall of fame and an Unsung Hero Award.

He has long held leadership roles in the athletic conference the school is part of. At the state level, Dow has served on the MPA cheering, softball and advisory committees and is currently chair of the MPA classification committee.

His state service also includes a stint on the MIAAA Board of Directors. Dow currently is the MIAAA’s associate director, as well as chair of state awards. He was MIAAA president in 2003-04.

Dow was named MIAAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2014 and inducted to the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Honors in 2015. In 2016, he was chosen for the MIAAA’s Gerry Durgin Excellence in Leadership Award.

He graduated from MDIHS in 1978 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Husson in Bangor.
