BANGOR — Several Mount Desert Island paddlers competed this weekend in the annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race hosted by the Bangor Department of Parks and Recreation.
The 16.5-mile race began in the town of Kenduskeag and ended near the confluence of the Penobscot River in downtown Bangor. This year’s race was postponed a week from the traditional third weekend in April due to persistent cold and ice.
In the open class, Chris Strout of Bar Harbor finished in 3:46.22. Craig Roebuck of Otter Creek logged a time of 5:00.41.
Ander Thebaud of Mount Desert and Bob Hessler of Ellsworth came in first in the C-2 Mix Recreation division with their time of 2:33.26.
Greg Veilleux of Bass Harbor and son Andrew Veilleux of Portland were second in the C-2M Canoe Recreation division with a time of 2:50.21. Also in that division, Dustin Dunn and Garrett Hardison of Hulls Cove came in with a time of 2:51.53. Robert Hanscom of Bar Harbor and Adam Sawyer of Trenton finished in 3:57.58.
Chantrelle Cousins of Bass Harbor was ninth in the K-1 Long division with 3:04.28. Gary Stellpflug of Southwest Harbor was sixth in the C-1 Canoe Experience division with 3:32.00. Tom Sheehan of Trenton competed in the C-2 Mixed beginner division.
