What started out as a senior exhibition project for Mount Desert Island High School alum Chris Heel has become an annual event for area runners and walkers who want to race for a good cause.

Judson Cake of Bar Harbor came in first place in the 5K with a time of 16 minutes, 46 seconds, followed by Peter Williams in 18:01.

Olivia Johnson, a member of the Mount Desert Island High School track team, was the first female finisher and 10th overall in 22:44. Eliza Bishop of Seal Cove was second for the women and 11th overall with 23:42.

Dogs were welcome at the event, and so many participants had their furry friends decked out in puzzle-themed bandanas.

Following the race, runners enjoyed refreshments and awards at the Tan Turtle Tavern.

Proceeds from the race go to the Autism Society of Maine and other programs supporting autism awareness.
