Boys trip up Crusaders

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team moved to the top of the Class B North standings after a Saturday home win, 77-35 against John Bapst.

Coming into the game, both teams were 3-1 on the season. After one quarter, the Trojans had a slim 18-13 lead. In the second quarter, the MDI defense only allowed Bapst four more points while the offense kicked into higher gear. The score at halftime was 38-18 and the final score was 77-35.

MDI’s Derek Collin led all scorers with 38 points, including three 3-point shots. Drew Shea contributed 10 points and Eli Parady had eight.

“Our kids played really well offensively that game,” head coach Justin Norwood said. “We’ve been struggling a little bit, figuring out what our roles are.”

The new team is almost half underclassmen and players new to varsity. Everyone on the varsity roster had some playing time Saturday.

“We had a couple guys get their first varsity hoop,” Norwood said.

This week, the team hosts Caribou (3-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Presque Isle (3-1) Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

“Caribou is going to be really tough,” Norwood said. “They’re returning a lot of the team and have a couple of very, very good players.”

Presque Isle, too, “always gives us a good time,” he said.

The annual holiday-week tournament is a major community event, and this year inductions to the MDI Athletic Hall of Fame are planned for Thursday before the girls’ basketball game.
