BAR HARBOR — It may be only September, but the Mount Desert Island High School boys’ soccer team is looking towards the state championships in late October.
“Our goal every season is to make it to the state championship,” head Coach Tyler Frank said in an email. “There are so many people, from players, parents, teachers, school administration/front office, boosters, bus drivers, fans, coaches’ families, alumni etc., investing a lot of time in this experience to have any less of a goal. I expect no less than 100 percent from each player every game.”
After falling to Erskine Academy in an early round of the playoffs last season, the team is working hard to reach its goal.
Twelve returning juniors and seniors will make up most of the 20-player roster.
“It is always exciting to see who comes back and what work they accomplished in the off season,” Frank said. “The first practices are primarily assessment of player strengths and areas for improvement, but now that we have had [preseason matches], we can start identifying areas to work on.”
Frank said the team’s strengths so far are “dedication, commitment and supporting each other to give their best in every practice and game.”
He said the players need to work on their conditioning.
The coach maintains that “all players are key players,” but that goalkeeper Hayden Goodwin stood out by allowing only one goal in a preseason game against Gray-New Gloucester.
Other team members include Kendrew Van Gorder, Zach Galeaz, Jake Ressel, Nick Ressel, Avery Lavelle, Eli McDonnell, Joe Grubb, Russell Kropff, Adam Bydeson, Jose Chumbe, Griffin Maristany, Matthew Staples, Owen Mild, Simon Davis, Jared Norton, September Murray, Derek Collin, Oliver Johnston, Nick Duley and Trevor Morrison.
While the team looks to have a solid defense so far, Frank said much of the preseason work was on “possession, possession, possession.”
“You can only score if you have the ball,” he said.
The team hosted Hampden for a preseason game Tuesday. They host Hermon at 1 p.m. Saturday on the stadium field for the official season opener.
