Mariaville Town Clerk Cindi Sargent grew up in Ellsworth and, after graduating from Ellsworth High School, “learned how to be a travel agent” by attending the Wilma Boyd Travel School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She then worked three years for Delta Dream Vacations in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Returning to Maine, Cindi worked at Union Trust Company in Ellsworth. She moved to Fort Rucker, Alabama after marrying Jason Sargent of Lamoine, an EHS graduate who had joined the Army. Jason left the service in 2000 to become a Maine state trooper, and “in 2000 we built a house out here in Mariaville” on 58 acres that Jason had bought from a relative, Cindi said.
Jason rejoined the Army in 2007. Cindi and their three sons joined him at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia in 2008 and stayed there after Jason died from cancer in 2011. Cindi brought her boys back to Maine in 2014 to live in their Mariaville home.
Appointed by Mariaville selectmen as the town clerk in May 2016, Cindi is also the registrar of voters, the deputy treasurer, and the deputy tax collector. Ruth Bartlett is the treasurer, deputy town clerk, and deputy registrar of voters.
Of Cindi’s three sons, the oldest, Nicholas, is in the Army. Andrew is a junior at Lees-McRae College in North Carolina, and William attends the Beech Hill School in Otis.
Cindi is engaged to Peter McDevitt. “We do a lot of kayaking and camping,” she said, and they enjoy riding their side-by-side ATV. Leaving home in Mariaville, “we go to Machias for dinner” on the ATV, Cindi said. “We’ve been out to the wind mills” in townships 16 and 22, and she and Peter took several autumn 2018 rides. “The foliage was just gorgeous,” she said.
