Meet Brooklin Town Clerk Heather Candage

While growing up in Sedgwick, Heather Candage attended grades 3-5 in a small Brooklin school across the Bay Road from the First Baptist Church. Today she works as the Brooklin town clerk in that same building, which became the town office after the new Brooklin School opened just up the Bay Road.

After graduating from George Stevens Academy (she has pleasant memories of being a clarinetist in the band), Candage worked several years as a CNA in local nursing homes and then seven years as the Blue Hill Dentistry receptionist.

Named Brooklin’s deputy town clerk and deputy tax collector on Oct. 28, 2018, she became the town clerk and tax collector on June 22, 2017. Her deputy is Valerie Messana.

Open 7-11 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, the clerk’s office is often busy with motor vehicle registrations and biennial tax payments. The annual return of summerfolk brings a corresponding increase in boat registrations and clamming licenses.

Candage and her husband, Dana, live in Brooklin with their son and daughter, both students at GSA. Candage enjoys flower gardening, and “I love to read: thrillers, suspense, mysteries,” with crime novelist Patricia Cornwell among her favorite authors.

“When I was younger, I read a lot of Stephen King,” Candage said.

Accompanied by the family’s two golden retrievers, “we love to go hiking, usually around here,” she said. The Candages also enjoy camping “mostly in-state” with their camper, and Heather and Dana have snowmobiles and ATVs that they often trailer in season to visit with friends who own a camp near Grand Lake Stream.

The family also likes to travel. After spending time visiting central Florida attractions in the past, “this winter was the first time I’d been to Cocoa Beach,” Candage said. “I really like the beach part of Florida.”
