The light of hope

To the Editor:

It is with a combination of melancholy and pride that we have decided to bring the Carol Dyer Memorial “Light the Way to a Cure” Luminaria Evening to a conclusion. August 6, 2016, was our last event after 15 years.

Over that decade and a half, we lost family, friends and community members. We also found friends, community and hope.

This began as a way to honor our dear friend Carol Dyer after she lost her battle with brain cancer in June of 2001. Inspired by a local Relay for Life event, particularly the luminaria ceremony held during the walk, we got to work planning our first event. It started out as a small gathering to provide us with an outlet to both celebrate and grieve. And we have become inspired and humbled by how much it has grown over the years.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community both on Mount Desert Island and around the world, we have raised more than $75,000 for the American Cancer Society.

We also couldn’t have done this without the continued support of so many people and organizations, including the YWCA of MDI, Karen Zimmermann and Z Studio, MacQuinn’s, Reel Pizza, Pat’s Pizza, Epi’s, Rosalie’s, CJ’s Big Dipper, The Jackson Laboratory, MDI Hospital, the town of Bar Harbor, the Bar Harbor Rotary Club, Steve Lambert, The First, Jeff Dobbs Productions, Earl Brechlin, the Mount Desert Islander, Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, and Peter and David Lindquist. Thank you so, so much.

We also want to share our appreciation for all our long-suffering family members and friends who would do anything we volunteered them for. And thanks to the students and local community members who have helped in so many ways.

We hope that the legacy of this event is to inspire you all to reach out and do positive work in your community on any scale. We know we will.
