No excuses

To the Editor:

I would like to respond to the letter written by Peter T. Benson on Oct. 20 entitled “Presidential traditions.”

As a mother, a wife and a daughter, I feel the need to address Benson on his equating Donald Trump’s alleged sexual harassment and assault to past presidential consensual affairs. The key word being “consensual.”

What Trump is accused of is not a “mistake” caused by his human anatomy or a wandering eye, but alleged assault. We have a huge problem in this country with ignoring, victim blaming and excusing sexual harassment and assault. This is only perpetuated when we allow language such as “male animal” and “luscious creatures” to be used to describe both perpetrators and victims of sexual misconduct.

I hope that we can all agree, despite political differences (even in such a divisive election year) that it is time to stop minimizing and excusing such conduct.
