To the Editor: Worthwhile effort

To the Editor:

A big “thank you” to your newspaper for its front page coverage on June 27 of the Jesup Library’s fund-raising kickoff celebration. I also appreciate the Islander’s coverage of the second annual Ashley Bryan Lecture that was given on July 14 by nationally-acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni.

Since 2012, the Jesup has been preparing to update its stately 1911 building and to add to it a modern wing that will enhance the services that it offers to the people of Bar Harbor.

A state-of-the-art modern library is important to our children and grandchildren. It complements our public schools. In school, a child learns to think, consider society’s challenges and solve problems. In a library, children have easy access to up-to-date information on which to apply their analytic skills.

The Jesup’s goal is to improve its offerings to children and the underserved in our community. To do this, the library needs the full support of every element of our community – current users, potential new users, civic organizations, businesses and seasonal guests.

Roughly three-quarters of the funds necessary for the overall project have been raised or pledged. Over this summer, the Jesup’s Board and library director will be asking individuals, businesses and community groups to help the library reach the finish line.

If $2.5 million can be generated by October, construction on a new wing with elevators, archives and youth services space will begin next spring. I urge all the Islander’s readers to consider how they can contribute to this worthwhile community effort.
