To the Editor: The time is nigh

To the Editor:

This summer, where did my 6-year-old son meet a Cirque du Soleil juggler and get personal training tips on how to become a ninja? The Jesup Memorial Library!

I am a Bar Harbor resident and the director of the Southwest Harbor Public Library and write to you to encourage your support of the Jesup Memorial Library’s final push to finish its capital campaign.

The Jesup has done a great job supporting my son’s learning with close collaboration in preschool, kindergarten classes and even summer camp this year – but only with an expansion will he likely continue to have as close a relationship with his town’s library. Many children and teens prefer to be more than 15 feet away from the dollhouse they were irrepressibly drawn to when they were a toddler.

Mount Desert Island has remarkably vibrant and historic libraries that predate the national library movement. This is good news for our already burdened taxpayers, who ordinarily foot the complete bill for building and operating costs for libraries in this country, but it then becomes an important and necessary personal ask to you when construction is needed. Jesup has shown quintessential New England thrift by not asking for capital support in 111 years.

Our island libraries work hard to collaborate with programs and services and are mindful of how we can complement each other’s collections. We commonly send our patrons and researchers to Jesup for its local history collection. It will be exciting to have fuller access to Jesup’s remarkable historical resources in the new building.

The time is nigh – building costs are not getting any cheaper. Please make a donation today. I just did!
