Ted needed

To the Editor:

Former four-term state representative Ted Koffman of Bar Harbor is running for state Senate from Hancock County. Please vote for him.

As chairman of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, he forged partnerships across the aisle. Maine is the beneficiary of his respectful leadership. Koffman introduced America’s first state climate legislation, worked to protect children from toxics and helped bring alewives back to the St. Croix River.

His conservation interests came early and naturally. Koffman’s Dad took him camping at Moosehead and Mount Kineo, and he developed a love for the Allagash, which he has canoed dozens of times. As an administrator at College of the Atlantic, he helped students understand public policy issues. And as executive director of Maine Audubon, he brought his knowledge and skills to advancing conservation through nonprofit advocacy and science.

Koffman is by nature collegial. He looks for the crucial middle ground, which is the best way to derive consensus from sometimes polar opposite policy viewpoints. Especially in today’s supercharged political climate – well described in the Mount Desert Islander’s editorial and news sections – that ability is needed in Maine.

We Hancock County residents are lucky to have Ted Koffman working for us. He has my vote for state Senate. I hope he has yours.
