Taking the fifth

To the Editor:

At the March 15 Bar Harbor Town Council meeting, the chairman prohibited comment from the public on matters in litigation. He stated there were “risks” should the council not respond to questions.

Fortunately, the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects people from these risks. Councilors can “take the Fifth” and avoid any risk of self-incrimination.

This would give Bar Harbor citizens their constitutional right to speak under the First Amendment and allow every citizen to hear all sides of the issues.
