To the Editor:
If the town of Bar Harbor can afford it without raising citizens’ taxes, it would be nice to have a parking garage on Lower Rodick Street to ease congestion downtown during the busiest few weeks of the summer.
However, the idea of installing curbside parking meters along Cottage, Main and Mount Desert streets to help pay for the structure is a terrible one.
Curbside meters are an eyesore and would detract from the hometown village atmosphere that the town has worked so many years to establish. Meters also would hurt downtown small businesses and create traffic and parking chaos on side streets and in residential neighborhoods, where parking is free.
If a new parking garage is to be built, it should be financed by those who have need of extra parking and by those who would use it.
