To the Editor:
The Dec. 31 State of Maine column by Jill Goldthwait “Politics and clowning around” cited two foreign entertainers in government who fell flat. However, it conveniently ignored a clown serving in Congress, Al Franken of Michigan.
You can argue that Al Franken is serious in his endeavors, but he was, and is, a comedian.
Entertainers of all sorts have done government work, including Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronald Reagan, Sonny Bono, George Murphy, Shirley Temple Black, Clare Booth Luce and Helen Gahagan Douglas.
Just because Donald Trump, who is as much a businessman as an entertainer, is working to be on that list does not disqualify him.
