To the Editor:

As many of you may know, on March 25, a fire broke out in Eric Henry’s Carpentry shop in Southwest Harbor, destroying the building, tools, supplies and our business’ home of 35 years. It has been a long week of tough choices and gritty work.

However, we feel overwhelmed and blessed by our fabulous community and the hard, determined work of our local Fire Departments. As soon as they arrived, the Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Mount Desert Fire Departments went to work fighting and containing the fire. When the flames reached the second floor and they knew the building could not be saved, they managed to keep the office free of flames and even prevented damage from water from the hoses. They contained the fire and protected our family home, neighboring houses and all the outbuildings. We are beyond thankful and impressed with their hard work and capable hands.

To our community, friends, family, old and new acquaintances, near and far, the outpouring of food, offers of helping hands, calls, emails, cards, thoughts and prayers have been tremendous. It has been an outpouring of love and support sorely needed, and incredibly appreciated, in these overwhelming circumstances.

We have a lot of work ahead of us. Many of you have offered to help in many forms. We hear and thank you for those. Once our future is more settled, the plan of action set, we hope to be able to take you up on some of those offers.

Spending time with you, our community, while working towards a new beginning, would be a bright light looking forward.

Thank you to all.

The Henry Family
