MDI like a family

To the Editor:

My name is Michael Duffy, also known as Mike Duffy to all the kids I teach. I came to this island in 1997, moving from a hectic-paced Philly suburb. Even as a kid, I loved this island and jumped at the opportunity to move here. In the last few years, I have lost much of my actual family and when this happened, my adopted family (the community of Mount Desert Island) rallied by my side.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for helping me in my latest woes. There are so many people I wanted to thank that I decided to write this letter. I recently lost the use of my old 1993 Saturn. It finally gave out after more than 450,000 miles of driving. In fact, in the last few weeks I was starting my car with a screwdriver.

As a starving artist, I was not able to purchase another car, so I asked a friend at Camp Beech Cliff to put out a request for a car for sale on Facebook. The sequence of events that happened next was amazing. A dear friend started a Go Fund Me account, and the response was incredible. I was moved to tears seeing how many people care. Still more friends helped me out of the transportation problems so I could get to my classes and back. And more friends gave me great leads on possible cars.

Well I am happy to report that I have bought a car, and I am driving once again.

This island has inspired me over the years. I want to inspire others. Living on this island is indeed like having one giant family. Thanks a million times.
