To the Editor:
As residents of Southwest Harbor, we are concerned over the current discussion of increased paddle boarding and other activities on Long Pond in Somesville.
We heartily approve the Mount Desert town policy of restricting activity on Long Pond for one simple reason – our health. Long Pond is the water reservoir for Southwest Harbor.
Our intake is as far from the Pond’s End as it can be, of course, but the “resource,” drinkable water, is limited. Thus far, there have been moderate quality problems with Southwest Harbor water, which are being addressed, but any real increase in the use of Long Pond is bound to degrade the water quality.
We sincerely hope that Long Pond will continue to be protected.
